What You Will Learn

This updated 3-hour course provides an overview of the humanitarian community’s shelter and settlements activities, and examines trends based on past experiences and how humanitarian actors can prepare to face emerging challenges. The course discusses both shelter and its setting (settlements) and why shelter should be viewed as more than just four walls and a roof.  Available in English, French, Arabic, and Spanish.

Objectives: 

  • Define Shelter and Settlements (S&S) sector terminology

  • Identify global settlements trends affecting humanitarian shelter assistance

  • Describe what S>4W+R means

  • Identify various types of shelter sector interventions

  • Explain important impacts of shelter on other sectors

  • Apply concepts and techniques for linking shelter to long-term recovery and reconstruction

  • Provide examples of virtual assessments

The course was developed by InterAction with the support of USAID/OFDA and is designed for university students, humanitarian practitioners, program managers, and housing stakeholders such as government officials.
