Covid-19 led humanitarian organizations to experiment with new methods of learning delivery. Now that the pandemic has eased, what are the considerations when choosing a learning format?

It is an understatement to say that the COVID-19 pandemic has influenced the ways we design and deliver training, and how we engage with our learners and support our partners.
DisasterReady is part of a humanitarian training provider forum in Europe, and this is a subject that has been part of many of our conversations. We recently shared our reflections about how the pandemic transformed, accelerated and/or confirmed the changes we had been witnessing in the way humanitarian learning is delivered, and in particular the growing place of blended learning.
Pulling together stories from various members of this collaborative peer group, we realized these included many nuggets of wisdom and good practice that could benefit the wider sector. In this quick guide, we gathered different case studies illustrating the key questions and factors you may want to consider when selecting your learning format.
We hope this quick guide will inform and enrich your training design and delivery, and we welcome your own stories and reflections on the evolution in the ways humanitarian learning happen: feel free to contact Em Lacroix to join the conversation!

I just read this article and the emphasis on accessibility and engagement in choosing learning formats is spot on slope
One important consideration when choosing a learning format is accessibility: making sure learners with limited connectivity, disabilities, or differing language skills can engage fully. Another is engagement—online platforms allow for scale, but we need to make sure learners remain active participants rather than passive recipients.
It reminds me a little of playing the Escape Road game, where every turn requires adapting to new challenges while keeping sight of the end goal. Selecting the right learning format feels the same: balancing constraints with creativity to ensure learners can reach their destination.
The shift towards blended learning has been eye-opening, much like my experience with the rice purity test, where I discovered new perspectives on personal growth. It’s fascinating how these changes in training delivery can enhance engagement and learning outcomes.
